GAWA’s Young Geographer of the Year Competition 2026
2026: Students for Sustainable Development
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2026 the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.
“Sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet.”
This is the ninth year of GAWA’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition. The concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection and sustainability are central to the study of Geography. For this year’s competition GAWA is inviting students to present their own inquiries on examples of sustainable development occurring in their local area (Western Australia). Students should consider the social, economic and environmental aspects of the development that make it, or would, make it sustainable.
