GAWA's Young Geographer of the Year Competition 2025
2025: Restoring our Environment
2021-2030 is the ‘UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration’ . This is a call for governments and communities all around the world to unite in stopping the destruction of environments and return them to a healthy, sustainable state. Action on environmental restoration this decade is crucial to ensure we meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Successful environmental restoration is beneficial for the climate, will increase biodiversity and improve human wellbeing. 2025 marks the halfway point of this ‘Decade’ and presents a unique opportunity for geography students to examine what has been achieved and what is yet to be achieved?
This is the eighth year of GAWA’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition. The concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection and sustainability are central to the study of Geography. This year’s competition allows students to create a presentation outlining a local area (within Western Australia) where environmental restoration should take place. Consider (where relevant) what has happened to the area (human and/or natural processes)? Why does the area need to be restored? Which species need to be included in the restoration and why?
